First Violin Principal

The Vaasa City Orchestra is the leading classical music organisation in Ostrobothnia. Under the leadership of Chief Conductor Anna-Maria Helsing, our 31 professional musicians form an accomplished symphony orchestra, for which we are now seeking:

A First Violin Principal to join us in a permanent position from 20 July 2026, or by agreement.

Audition

Monday, 18 May 2026, starting at 12:00

Video Pre-Screening

  • 1–2 movements of your choice from Bach’s Partita or Sonata for solo violin; if the Bach movement you choose is longer, please perform a 2–4 minute excerpt from the beginning
  • W.A. Mozart: Die Zauberflöte Overture Allegro, bars 20–63
  • F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Symphony No. 4 Op. 90 Allegro Vivace, bars 1–86

Audition Requirements

  • W.A. Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 3 in G, No. 4 in D, or No. 5 in A, 1st movement including the cadenza
  • A piece of your choice from the Romantic period, with piano accompaniment
  • Orchestral and chamber music pieces to be announced later

Submit your application by Sunday, 5 April 2026 at [email protected]. Please include a YouTube link to your video, recorded in a single take without any editing or pauses between the Bach and orchestral pieces.

Invitations to the audition will be sent by email shortly after the application deadline, following the video pre-screening.

Audition location: Vaasa City Hall, Senaatinkatu 1, Vaasa

The Vaasa City Orchestra will provide an accompanist for the audition, but you are also welcome to bring your own pianist at your own expense.

Salary: In accordance with the applicable collective agreement.

The position is subject to a six-month probationary period. The successful candidate must provide an acceptable medical certificate confirming their fitness for work before taking up the position.
