About the Program

Opera Australia invites outstanding early-career string musicians to join the Patricia H. Reid Orchestral Fellowships in 2027. This world-class program equips the next generation of Australian string musicians with vital professional skills, providing a clear pathway toward orchestral careers.

In 2027, Opera Australia is offering Fellowships in violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Over the course of the year, Fellows can expect to receive $28,847 in call fees (inclusive of superannuation) for a minimum of 100 rehearsal and performance calls.

Fellows join the Opera Australia Orchestra in mainstage opera and ballet with Australia’s leading performing arts companies over a 12-month period. This immersive experience allows young string players to develop and refine the skills required to perform at a professional level, building repertoire knowledge in this specialised field.

Fellows also receive mentoring from experienced members of the Opera Australia Orchestra, with development in audition technique, performance preparation, chamber music, and sustainable career planning. The program is generously supported by the Patricia H. Reid Endowment Foundation.
