Flute – Baron Swerts Academy (2026–2027)

The Baron Swerts Academy at the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is a prestigious programme that nurtures outstanding early-career orchestral musicians, preparing them for a versatile career in the profession. Run by one of Belgium’s foremost international cultural institutions based in Antwerp, the Academy is valued and supported by orchestra members, alumni, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

Programme

Academists will be engaged for 12 pre-scheduled weeks between September and June. During these weeks, participants take part in orchestra projects with leading conductors (including the chief conductor), attend workshops and training sessions, and perform in a Mock Audition. The orchestral projects feature major symphonic works and Flemish repertoire.

Each Academist is assigned a mentor and receives 10 lessons from orchestra musicians of their choosing.

Requirements

  • Under 27 years of age on the date of the audition
  • Currently pursuing or having completed a Bachelor in Music (or equivalent)
  • Nationality of an EU country or Switzerland, or ability to provide an A1 visa for the entire season or a valid Belgian work permit prior to applying
  • Candidates must provide an ID confirming their nationality

Terms

Upon successful completion of the Baron Swerts Academy programme, participants will be admitted to the second round of orchestra auditions for equivalent positions for a period of 3 years. Academists will be compensated in accordance with the CAO voor het Paritair Comité voor het Vermakelijkheidsbedrijf.
