Malmö Symphony Orchestra is inviting applications for 1st Concertmaster

 

About the position:

Permanent full-time with a limit of 55 % workdays on the podium.

The positions comes with an A. Stradivarius violin (1703).

 

You are required to:

Be an excellent musician with outstanding orchestral and solo violin playing abilities.
Lead and develop MSO in a positive, engaging, forward-looking way, closely together with chief conductor and other section leaders.
Act as a committed ambassador for the orchestra on and off the podium.
Possess effective people and performance management skills, including the ability to give constructive feedback, deal with sensitive issues and to make difficult decisions.

The responsibilities are shared with 1st concertmaster Marika Fältskog.

Invitations:

Audition takes place only after personal invitation. When invited you will start the process either in round 1 or round 2.

 

In case of a high number of applicants you may be asked to provide a video recording to qualify for round 1 .

 

The live audition will be held at Malmö Live Concert hall within the following dates: May 12 & 13, 2026

 

Application deadline is April 20 – invitations will be sent out continuously before this date.

If you are asked to submit a video the deadline to do so is April 23.

We will not compensate for travels and accommodation until the trial weeks.

Rounds 1-3 are held behind a screen.

First and second movement with cadenzas from one of the mentioned concertos.
1st round

W.A. Mozart – Violin Concerto no. 3, no. 4 or no. 5.
First and second movement with cadenzas from one of the mentioned concertos.
2nd round

First movement with cadenza from one of the following Violin Concertos:

Beethoven, Brahms, Nielsen, Sibelius or Tchaikovsky.
3rd round

5th round

Trial week(s) with the orchestra
MSO tunes to 442 Hz

A pianist will be provided by MSO but you are welcome to bring your own.
