Principal Viola (75%) & Associate Principal Viola (75%)

The Residentie Orkest The Hague is seeking distinguished violists for the positions of Principal Viola (75%) and Associate Principal Viola (75%).

Position Requirements

Candidates must be accomplished violists with excellent orchestral and ensemble skills. For the principal role in particular, the orchestra seeks a natural, coaching leader who can inspire and guide the section. Performance standards and professional etiquette are expected to be of the highest calibre.

Every player is regarded as an ambassador for the orchestra and is expected to participate in concert appearances as well as social, educational, and ensemble activities. A positive team-player attitude with the right balance between individuality and sectional playing is essential.

Application & Audition

Please submit your application no later than 29 April 2026, using a fully completed application form available on the orchestra’s website.

Auditions will be held on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 June 2026.

Compulsory Repertoire

  • Choice between Carl Stamitz Viola Concerto in D (1st movement with cadenza) or Franz Anton Hoffmeister Viola Concerto in D (1st movement with cadenza)
  • Choice between Bartók Viola Concerto (1st movement), Walton Viola Concerto (1st movement), or Hindemith’s Schwanendreher (1st movement)
  • Bach: Sarabande from 1st or 2nd Cello Suite
  • Beethoven: String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3 (1st movement) – performed in the final round with members of the Residentie Orchestra
  • Orchestral excerpts to be determined

The selection committee reserves the right to make a pre-selection from written applications. An application interview will form an important part of the selection process.
