Irish Defence Forces — Saxophone
The Irish Defence Forces School of Music is currently seeking Saxophone players for all three of its military bands. Applications are welcome from any player who meets the requirements outlined below.
Overview
Candidates must hold a minimum playing standard of ABRSM Grade 7, or equivalent, and have a genuine interest in the varied and rewarding musical career that the Defence Forces School of Music offers.
Military Instrumentalists serve as full-time musicians, primarily supporting the musical requirements of state and military ceremonial events. Defence Forces bands also perform an extensive and eclectic repertoire at concerts and community events throughout Ireland and abroad.
Applicants must be at least 18 and under 39 years of age on the closing date of 21 June 2026, and must be eligible to work and reside in Ireland.
Salary & Benefits
Starting salary, following successful completion of 6 weeks of Induction Training and 2–3 Star Training, is over €44,000 per annum. Full pay scales are available at military.ie. All Defence Forces members are entitled to:

Band Locations
The three Defence Forces military bands are located at:
- The Army No. 1 Band: Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin 6
- Band 1 Brigade: Collins Barracks, Cork
- Band 2 Brigade: Custume Barracks, Athlone
Physical Fitness
In addition to their musical responsibilities, all School of Music personnel are required to maintain Defence Forces fitness standards. Adequate time, resources, and facilities are provided to support this requirement.
Selection Procedure
Stage 1 — Audition & Interview: An audition immediately followed by an interview.
Stage 2 — Medical, Physical Examination & Security Clearance: Candidates must complete a detailed medical examination and pass security clearance.
