Part-time Orchestra Librarian

Interested in an exciting position in the arts? The Battle Creek Symphony is seeking a part-time Orchestra Librarian. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing and organizing all of the music needed for performances, and for maintaining the orchestra’s library of parts and scores, in order to support the art and mission of The Music Center.

This rewarding position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Preferred experience includes 1 – 3 years’ experience in orchestra librarian work. Proficiency in string instruments is preferred. The Orchestra Librarian will also need knowledge of symphonic music, proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, and excellent communication skills–both verbal and written, are a must. A high degree of reliability, capacity to multi-task, and ability to work with little supervision, meet strict deadlines, and function well under pressure are of utmost importance for this position.

The Librarian is required to attend all rehearsals and concerts. Flexible hours include up to 60 hours per concert (a total of 5). Hourly rate is $19/hour. Some work (i.e. preparation of parts) can be done off-site but there are times when work in the office is required.

This is an excellent position for those seeking a part-time career in Arts Administration.  Previous employees of The Music Center are now holding leadership positions with the Grand Rapids Symphony, Cincinnati Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

Principal: $100.00
Section: $90.00

2024-2025 SINGLE SCHOOL CONCERT SERVICE
Principal: $75.00
Section: $68.00

Mileage: Mileage is reimbursed at $.35 per mile per trip up to $120 for roundtrips less than 800 miles, or $225 for roundtrips greater than 800 miles, or $225 for airfare reimbursement for distances over 1,000 miles. Up to one roundtrip per day is reimbursed. Only one roundtrip will be reimbursed for Musicians utilizing homestays. The maximum mileage reimbursed per concert cycle is $225. Mileage shall be computed by using www.maps.google.com with the starting address being the Musician’s address as printed on their contract and the ending address being W.K. Kellogg Auditorium, 60 West Van Buren Avenue, Battle Creek, Michigan 49017. Changes in address should be brought to the attention of the Operations Manager by the start of the first rehearsal of the concert cycle requiring a change.
• 0-799 miles = $0.35 per mile up to $120 per roundtrip
• 800+ miles = $0.35 per mile up to $225 per roundtrip
• Total cap = $225

Lodging: Every effort will be made to provide home stays for Musicians when requested 21 days in advance the scheduled performance. Housing cannot be guaranteed outside this time frame, with the exception of last-minute substitutes.
Lodging will be provided for Musicians traveling 60 miles or more to the performance.
