The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Third Horn.

About the Role

This is a full-time, contract position based in Poole, Dorset. The BSO performs extensively across the south and south-west of England, nationally and internationally, and delivers wide-ranging education and community work through its award-winning Participate department.

The Orchestra’s Chief Conductor is Mark Wigglesworth; Leader, Amyn Merchant.

Audition Process

Successful applicants will either be invited to submit an initial screened video audition, or invited directly to live screened auditions based on their demonstrable experience. Those succeeding in the video round will be invited to attend live auditions.

Live auditions will be held in Poole/Bournemouth in Summer/Autumn 2026. Please check the website for confirmed dates.

Audition Repertoire

  • Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 — first movement
  • Mozart Horn Concerto No. 4 — first movement (exposition only)
  • Orchestral excerpts (sent to invited candidates)
  • Sight-reading may be included
