Overview

The United States Naval Academy Band announces an immediate vacancy for Soprano or Alto
Vocalist to lead Popular Music Groups, Concert Band, Jazz Combo, Ceremonial Band, and
perform as a solo vocalist. Applicants must demonstrate strong, versatile skills in the following
areas:

• Vocal repertoire covering all popular musical styles including Rock, Pop, Funk,
Country, R&B, and Motown.
• Stylistic range to perform in jazz and traditional choral/concert band settings.
• Ability to lead groups on small and large stages and entertain live and televised
audiences. Must demonstrate confident stage personality, engaging charisma during
performance, and the ability to deliver strategic messaging as Master of Ceremonies for
Naval Academy Band events.
• Ability to read music and general knowledge of music theory.

Applicants must submit audio recordings and a one-page resume to auditions@usna.edu by Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at 11:59 p.m EST to be considered for this audition. The live audition is by invitation only, and will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025. The audition committee reserves the right to dismiss any candidate who does not meet our strict musical and professional criteria.

All travel arrangements and expenses are the responsibility of the candidate. Active duty musicians from all branches of the U.S. military must also send a letter of endorsement from their Commanding Officer.

Starting salary for a new member of the U.S. Naval Academy Band is $71,734 – $79,690. Other benefits include 30 days paid leave annually, full medical coverage for members and their dependents, education tuition assistance, the G.I. Bill, and student loan repayment up to $65,000. Those selected for positions in the U.S. Naval Academy Band are advanced to the paygrade of E-6 (Musician First Class) upon successful completion of recruit training, under a contract for permanent assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band, Annapolis, MD.

All applicants must be aged 17 to 41 and otherwise qualified for service in the U.S. Navy. Please note that the Navy has strict requirements with regard to medical readiness and physical appearance. The United States Naval Academy Band was formed in November of 1852 by order of the Secretary of the Navy. The band’s primary mission is to provide musical support to the Superintendent, Commandant, and Brigade of Midshipmen. These dedicated professionals are known across the nation as “The Navy’s Oldest and Finest Band!” Our members have studied at prominent music schools and conservatories nationwide and have extensive experience in performance and teaching.

At the Naval Academy, the USNA Band performs for parades, graduations, athletic events, retirements, funerals and other traditional military ceremonies. In the community, the band presents concerts, provides music for civic events, and presents instructional clinics and performances for K-12 and university students.
