Introduction
Shanghai-born, Auckland-raised Eva Ding fell in love with the flute at age 8. In recognition of her potential as a performer, she has been the recipient of the New Zealand National Young Performer Award and regional Performing Arts Concerto and Overall Recital Awards. In 2017, Eva was honored as Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Young Soloist of the Year. She has been awarded scholarships and fellowships from organizations including the New Zealand Symphony and Auckland Philharmonia orchestras. Having played with the Auckland Philharmonia, Auckland Chamber, and Brooklyn Metro Chamber orchestras Eva is also an accomplished ensemble performer.
In 2017, Eva made her New York concerto debut with the Brooklyn Metro Chamber Orchestra playing Honegger’s “Concert da Camera” and was invited back in 2019 to perform Tailleferre’s relatively unknown “Concertino” for Flute, Piano, and Chamber Orchestra. An avid proponent of contemporary music, Eva gave the New Zealand premiere performance of Chinese-American composer Chen Yi’s “The Golden Flute” Concerto to a full house in the Auckland Town Hall, as a result of winning the Auckland Youth Orchestra Soloist Competition in 2016. Her most interesting gig, however, has to have been when she was the opening musical number for pro-wrestler, Orange Cassidy, at Independent Wrestling TV’s “Family Reunion” match.
Eva received the Manhattan School of Music President’s Scholarship and completed a Master of Music at the Manhattan School of Music with Robert Langevin, Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic. Prior to that, she gained her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honors from the University of Auckland, under the tutelage of Professor Uwe Grodd.
In her spare time, Eva plays with her poodle Chocco, who adores singing along to her flute practice.
