Introduction

Lim Xing Hong is a solo and chamber percussionist based in Singapore. He received his Diploma in Classical Performance (Percussion) from LASALLE College of the Arts and Bachelor of Music (First – Class Hons), from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts / Royal College of Music, London.

Having a deep interest in timpani playing, Xing Hong studied under Christian Schiøler (Principal Timpanist of Singapore Symphony Orchestra), Matthew Perry (Principal Timpanist of Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Grahame King, (Principal Timpanist of Royal Ballet Sinfonia Birmingham), Christopher Ridley (Associate Principal Timpanist of Royal Opera House), Mark Suter (Associate Principal Percussionist of Singapore Symphony Orchestra), Alex Neal (Co-Principal Perucssionist of BBC Symphony Orchestra) and Lim Meng Keh (Percussionist of Singapore Symphony Orchestra).  He also participated in numerous masterclasses by world renowned musician such as David Herbert, Principal Timpanist of Chicago Symphony Orchestra (USA), Dirk Wucherpfennig, Percussionist of Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Konzerthaus Berlin (Germany), Dr Gifford Howarth, International Marimba Artist (USA), Dr Wei Chen Lin International Marimba Artist (Taiwan) and Marta Klimasara International Marimba Artist (Poland).

Xing Hong currently serves as Associate Principal of the percussion in the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band. He is also Principal Timpanist with the Orchestra Collective, The Young Musicians’ Foundation Orchestra, and also a percussionist with the Singapore Wind Symphony Percussion Ensemble.

Xing Hong became a member of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra which he was privileged to be able to perform at the Young Euro Classic in Berlin 2012. He has traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe and USA, performing in international music festivals and taking part in military tattoos, Basel (Switzerland), Edinburgh (Scotland), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Khabarovsky (Russia) and Virginia (USA). Along with the Singapore Wind Symphony Percussion Ensemble, he was awarded Gold with Distinction in the 17th World Music Contest (2013) 1st Division, and most recently, Gold in the 18th World Music Contest (2017), World/Open Division.

Xing Hong has collaborated with various artists and appeared as soloist performing Ney Rosauro’s Marimba Concerto, Karel Husa’s Percussion Concerto and Paul Creston’s Marimba Concerto; solo timpanist for Zhangyi’s Carp Emerges (Concerto for Marimba, Percussion and Orchestra) and John Beck’s Concerto for Timpani.
