Introduction

Praised as “eloquent” by the New York Times and “warmly rhapsodic” by the Boston Globe, Taiwanese American violinist Max Tan has appeared on stages across the United States, Europe, and Asia, forging a varied career as performer and educator. He has performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Wallonie, the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of Polish Radio, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, The Juilliard Orchestra, amongst others. Mr. Tan is an alumnus of the Sylff and Kovner Fellowships and recipient of the Richard F. French Award from Juilliard and the Arthur Foote Prize from the Harvard Musical Association. He was a semifinalist at the 2019 Queen Elisabeth and 2022 Wieniawski violin competitions. Notable festival appearances include at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, Yellow Barn, Chelsea Music Festival, and The Perlman Music Program. This season, Mr. Tan launched “Listen Hear”, a new salon concert series at the Sarasota Art Museum, and also founded Soundbox Ventures, a non-profit organization dedicated to the organizing of artist residencies and concert experiences that build meaningful connections between artists and audiences. A Harvard alumnus and current doctoral candidate at Juilliard, Mr. Tan’s mentors include Catherine Cho, Donald Weilerstein, Itzhak Perlman, Lynn Chang, and Albert Markov. He is assistant faculty of violin and chamber music at Juilliard’s Pre-College Division. Mr. Tan is enjoys playing viola in chamber music.

Our mission is to build meaningful connections between musicians and audiences by organizing artist residencies and concerts that focus on making the artistic process accessible. In addition to the Listen Hear series at the Sarasota Art Museum, upcoming projects include concerts that celebrate Ned Rorem’s life in music and words around his Centenary in October 2023, presentation of Catalonian music that explores cultural identity, promoting music of our time through a new composer fellowship program in Sarasota, and a benefit concert at the intersection of music and medicine that celebrates the life of a fellow musical colleague recently diagnosed with ALS.
